A consequence of the net zero ambition will be the increased use of wood as a structural building component of large buildings. For insurers, mass timber projects present a number of obvious challenges. This presentation will explore the challenges that need to be addressed through collaboration between the construction industry and the insurance markets to ensure they are designing and constructing buildings that are both sustainable and insurable. This session will discuss mass timber projects in the Netherlands highlighting the case study of the remarkable project SAWA in Rotterdam, the first circular timber residential building of 50m high in the Netherlands. Even whilst still under construction the project has been awarded numerous architectural awards. The (ongoing) journey of insuring such a project and other timber projects in the Netherlands will be presented from an insurance manager’s perspective aiming to lead to valued discussions on how to approach such projects using “new” materials. Because as Architecture Prize pointed out there are more of these projects to come: “SAWA is an example project for new generations, an important step towards achieving the sustainability goals and proof that things can be done differently.”
