After a major pharmaceutical company suffered two big Nat Cat events - a hurricane striking a facility in Puerto Rico and a prolonged heat wave impacting a manufacturing plant in Europe - they found that their facilities were designed to cope with the 'old normal', only learned from historical events. To cope with new events, such as more extreme hurricanes and hotter, longer heatwaves, they needed to look at forward projections of climate change to learn what to expect and design accordingly. This practical workshop will delve into what sources of climate data are available to model and improve future designs and construction of facilities and infrastructure, who holds the responsibility to design for future climate and should Insurers incentivise these risk management initiatives?
