Presentation: Shipowners and yards – managing friction and liability in construction
Description

The relationship between shipowners and shipyards is critical to successful vessel construction, but it often gives rise to friction that can increase both hull & machinery and P&I liability exposures. This session explores key areas of tension—including contract performance, quality standards, schedule slippage, cost overruns and responsibility for defects or testing incidents—and how these challenges translate into potential claims under builders’ risk, H&M and P&I policies.

This session will examine the role of insurers in mitigating disputes, the importance of clear policy wordings and the value of structured risk management practices such as joint risk workshops, robust inspection regimes and pre-agreed dispute resolution frameworks. Attendees will gain practical insights on aligning expectations, managing both physical and liability risks during construction and leveraging insurance solutions to reduce the financial and operational impact of yard-owner disputes while ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout the build process.
