Presentation: Carriage of electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries – emerging risk and insurance challenges
Description

The rapid growth in the transport of electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries is introducing a new and complex risk category for shipowners, ports and insurers. This session will examine the unique hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly the risk of thermal runaway, fire propagation and challenges in detection and suppression at sea.

Speakers will analyse recent loss incidents involving vehicle carriers and container vessels, highlighting how battery chemistry, stowage practices and state of charge influence risk severity. The discussion will also address operational considerations for ports and logistics hubs, including storage, segregation and emergency response capabilities.

From an insurance perspective, the session will explore how the market is responding in terms of underwriting, pricing and policy conditions, and whether existing hull, cargo and liability covers are adequate. Particular focus will be given to risk mitigation strategies, evolving regulatory guidance and what shipowners and operators must demonstrate to secure sustainable and comprehensive insurance cover as volumes continue to grow.
