The impacts of climate change are geographic and climate region specific, which means that depending on the location and local climate, some impacts may present themselves more than others. Additionally, the meteorological variables (temperature, wind, precipitation, flood, etc) are also quite regional. In this workshop we will provide insights into the meteorological variables that are playing the biggest role in SE Asia, with a review of recent key meteorological datasets, focusing on temperature, wind, precipitation and flooding, and we will explore what impacts the changes in these variables are having on the industry.
We will also seek to identify the biggest challenges in weather data collection and application of the meteorological measurements to our industry. That is, was it actually an extreme event, or was the damage the result of poor design/installation/maintenance? We will discuss the challenges of the parametric approach, which include the uniform identification of an extreme event, and how we provide adequate measurement of events. Without satisfactory resolution of these issues, parametric insurance is doomed to fail.
