This breakout session explores the emerging risks and opportunities associated with energy transition technologies—specifically carbon capture and hydrogen—from the perspective of construction contractors and developer risk managers operating in the Middle East. As governments and developers across the region invest heavily in large-scale decarbonisation projects to meet net-zero and diversification goals, these assets present complex risk profiles that differ markedly from traditional energy and infrastructure projects.
The session will examine key insurability considerations across the project lifecycle, including design uncertainty, technology maturity, construction and commissioning risk, interface risk between conventional and new systems, operational reliability, and long-term performance guarantees. It will also address how insurers and reinsurers are responding to these emerging sectors, what underwriters expect in terms of risk allocation, contractual frameworks, and loss prevention, and how early engagement with brokers and insurers can improve project bankability. Through a practical Middle East lens, the discussion will highlight how effective risk identification and transfer strategies can enable contractors and developers to participate confidently in the region’s next wave of energy transition investments.
